Do Long and Tiring Working Hours Cause Baldness?

Each of us has to work to maintain a stable life and provide for our needs. But some working hours of some jobs or companies, however you may want to look at it, can be cruciating. Forty hours a week is a standard in terms of working hours. Yet some employers push their employees to work over 50 hours a week, not realizing how much it affects their employees’ mental and physical health. The irony of this situation is that pushing workers to work long hours actually decreases their effectiveness and efficiency.

In 2015, Sweden had passed the act to limit standard working hours from 8 hours to 6 hours. Some people were sceptical at first about the outcomes of such an act, but they were proven wrong by the scientific data. Studies show that by being able to spend more free time, workers were relieved of stress and anxiety that the work causes, thus increased their productivity. Finland is also preparing to pass a similar act to encourage workers to spend more time with their family. The bill may have passed by the time you read this.

We have mentioned that long and tiring working hours cause mental and physical complications, but how does it relate to hair loss?

We already know that stress and anxiety cause hair loss alongside many other complications. When we add tiredness next to stress and anxiety, which all stems from long working hours, hair loss is inevitable. And we have scientific data to back this up.

The Research of Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine

Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine in Seoul conducted research to prove whether long and tiring working hours cause baldness. We will not go into too much detail, but in short, it shows that working too much really does cause baldness. Employees who work 52 or more hours have a much higher chance of losing their hair compared to ones who work 40 hours a week.

So what should you do in case of hair loss due to long and tiring working hours? Well, the first thing that comes to mind is considering a different career pathway. But it isn’t as easy as it sounds.
