The Effects of Sports and Healthy Hair

Getting regular exercise is an important component to have a healthy and firm hair texture. Staying away from physical activity is not a good strategy for hair growth or your health in general. Of course, not everyone would want to pay fees to a gym only to go there and tire themselves out day in and day out.

What you should know is that avoiding sports may be harming your precious hair very badly. Your hair growth and the texture of grown hair get many positive effects from getting a routine physical activity.

Exercising is good for your health. We all know that, right? But what we have to say may surprise you a bit.

Hair Health

Many factors influence the health of your hair. We can briefly categorise them under two subcategories:

  • Mental effects
  • Physical effects

Spoiler alert! Exercise has a significant impact on both of them.

Even mild physical activities, you may be used to avoiding, such as taking the stairs instead of the escalator, impact your fitness.

Studies also show that stress is the main contributor to hair loss. We can reduce stress in a variety of ways, including exercise.

Being consistent with your exercising habits can evoke three different effects on your body to improve hair health.

The three changes are the following:

  1. Decreased cortisone levels
  2. Increased serotonin levels
  3. Increased blood flow

Let’s go over them one by one.

Three Changes Your Body Experiences with Consistent Exercise

Cortisone is a hormone that is responsible for hair thinning and hair loss when present in excessive amounts. Exercising regularly also decreases cortisone levels. When you exercise, your body gets a better cortisone saturation. Of course, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing too. Overexerting yourself can cause surges in cortisone levels, so do not burn yourself out and just be consistent.

Next in our list is serotonin. Serotonin is often associated with feelings of happiness in popular culture. How you feel throughout the day can have a significant impact on the health of your hair. Making good decisions towards a happier life can make both you and your hair happier in general.

Last in the list is the increase in blood flow. Our scalp and hair follicles around the scalp are all fed by capillaries. Capillaries are very small veins that stretch over the parts arteries can’t reach directly. The catch is that they get superconductive with regular exercise. More nutrition and moisture directed towards your follicles result in stronger and healthier hair. This is the reason why you sometimes see people giving out the advice that you should massage your scalp.

Ending Notes on Exercise

Just getting a routine that you can keep up will have a significant impact on your hair health. The hard part for most is staying committed to the routine. Of course, we humans have the capability to break and change our habits, so in the end, it all up to us.
