Can Breast Augmentation Surgery Cause Lupus?

This is an age ruled by science. Science has advanced to the point that man never thought to be possible. In other words, man is himself astounded by this advancement. The other thing that is ruling this age is fashion. Everyone is conscious about their looks. Women, above all, care about what they look like. Science has introduced a process called breast augmentation mammoplasty to improve women’s looks further and give them a chance to get their desired body shapes.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

It is a surgical procedure which aims to alter the shape or size of breasts. It can increase or decrease the size of the breasts. Additionally, it can also give the desired shape to the breasts. It also helps to recover after mastectomy.

Procedure

This process deals with shape and size. The silicone or saline composites perform the required function. Alternatively, composite implants also do the task. These composites placed under the breast muscles or tissue give the required shape. However, these implants are not permanent. On average, they last from seven to twelve years.

Is It Safe?

Certainly, every surgery has some risks. Like any other surgery, this has a risk of infection and other complications. For instance, some complications are with anaesthesia or other problems. It is another risk that the surgery may go awry at some point. If this happens, then the patient may need revision or follow-up surgery.

The other risks recorded by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons are as follows:

  • Incorrect implant positioning
  • Hematoma
  • Changes in the sensation of breasts and nipples
  • Loss of sensation
  • Displacement of implant
  • Wrinkled skin

There are chances of other complications due to foreign objects getting inside the body.

Can Breast Augmentation Cause Lupus?

After thorough research over the risks, we now consider lupus being one of its effects. The question is whether breast implants cause lupus. To answer this question, let’s examine what lupus is.

What Is Lupus?

It is an autoimmune disease which is a long-term disorder. In this disease, the immune system gets hyperactive. Meanwhile, this hyperactive system attacks its healthy cells and tissues.

Symptoms of Lupus

The symptoms of this disorder firstly include inflammation and swelling. Secondly, the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, and other vital organs get damaged.

Types of Lupus

There are different types of lupus. One of them is systemic lupus called erythematosus. In this lupus, the healthy cells get attacked.

Risks of Lupus after Augmentation

The risk of lupus after getting breast transplantation gets higher. The women without augmentation have a lower risk of lupus. For a long time, the medical community remained concerned about this surgery. Then, the silicon implants got attached with connective tissue problems. Consequently, the silicon implants got removed from the market. However, the concern regarding silicon implants was wrong.

Safe Procedure

After much research, the FDA declared silicon implants as safe. The silicon implants regained availability in the market in 2006.

In other words, like any other surgery, there are risks in breast augmentation. Lupus can also occur after this surgery, but it is very rare. The surgeons take the safes measures to perform it. And thus, the risks have lowered significantly.
