Hair Transplant Sun Exposure

In the process after transplantation, it is necessary not to expose it to direct sunlight for 1-2 months for the recovery to be fast and the crusts to form. At the same time, it should be protected from hot environments such as baths, pools, sea, sauna, a sea that will damage the hair follicles and directly damage the hair follicles.

If possible, it should generally be kept in the shade, a hat should be used even if it is rarely under the sun, but care should be taken that the hat does not squeeze the scalp and it should be allowed to breathe. Oxygen accelerates the wound healing process in the scalp. Sun rays have both beneficial and harmful effects. Excessive sun exposure can cause thickening of the scalp, weakening of the immune system, and many other diseases such as thin-skin. While grafts are removed from the donor area by surgical methods, slits opened in the recipient area are also created by surgical methods. After hair transplantation, the wound healing process begins.

Sun After Hair Transplantation

Sun rays are very important in wound healing. This is especially important in the operations of sun-exposed areas. There is a pigment called melanin in various layers of our skin. This pigment protects the skin from the damages of sunlight by absorbing the harmful rays coming from the sun. As exposure to the sun increases, the skin produces more melanin, which means the skin becomes darker.

Besides its many beneficial effects, the sun can also have harmful effects. Excessive sun exposure can lead to thickening of the skin, sunburn, premature ageing of the skin, weakening of the immune system, and DNA breaks. Here, if the healing wound is exposed to sunlight during wound healing, darkening of the colour can be seen in these wounds.

The scalp is directly exposed to the sun’s rays. It is important to be protected from sunlight after transplantation. After hair transplantation, which is a surgical procedure, mild rashes are inherent in wound healing. Being excessive under the sun prevents this rash from disappearing in a short time. Besides, unwant pigmentation increases and dark skin can show. Although sun exposure does not delay wound healing, it can cause problems such as increase pigmentation. Therefore, it  recommend to protect the transplantation area from sunlight, especially for the first one or two months after hair transplantation.

For this reason, it does not recommend to go to the beach to sunbathe and tan and also solarium after planting. If possible, it should generally keep in the shade, protected from sunlight, and a hat should use to protect from the sun while walking under the sun. However, care should take that these hats do not cause sweating in the transplantation area.

How Does Sun Exposure After Hair Transplantation Affect the Scalp?

The transplanted area cannot protect itself against sun rays for at least a few months after hair transplantation surgery. Our skin contains chromatophores that darken the skin when exposed to too much sun as a form of protection. However, these chromatophores become ineffective or die during transplantation, and it takes time for the grafts to heal or regenerate within them.

When it comes to hair transplantation, it is not only the outer skin layer that treat. While surgery and excessive sunlight penetrate these deep tissues, causing irreversible damage, the layers of the epidermis treat. Therefore, we recommend patients protect from the sun for at least 4 months.

  • Transplanted grafts need time to grow and adapt, which will affect the immune system and especially new hair;
  • A hair transplant will most likely cause hypersensitivity, at least in the first months. This may worsen under direct sunlight;
  • The sun can also affect the healthy skin around the hair transplant area by changing its colour.
