How to Choose a Hair Loss Treatment

A hair loss treatment is the one hope the person undergoing it has of restoring the looks they treasure so much. There are a few hair loss treatments to choose from. But that does not automatically make a choice easy either. Rather, it forces one to think deeply about which treatment is the most fitting one for them.

By knowing in detail what each of these treatments entails, we can start assessing from which we can benefit from. Be sure to educate yourself about each one of them to know properly how to choose a hair loss treatment.

The Hair Loss Treatments

There are a few hair loss treatments that can aid your hair loss situation, each in a different way, through different mechanisms. Learn all about them to see which one is the best for you.

Propecia

Also known as finasteride. It’s a prescription medication that was initially prescribed to men with enlarged prostates. It was not before long that its hair-loss-stopping properties started showing, ultimately changing its use.

Propecia works by interfering with an enzyme within your body called “alpha 5 reductase.” This enzyme converts testosterone, the main male sex hormone, into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Once formed, this DHT hormone proceeds to attach itself to the hair follicles. This ultimately makes the hair follicles shrink. The shrinking continues progressively until the follicles cease to grow all together, effectively causing baldness.

Therefore, by preventing the conversion of testosterone into DHT, there will not be any shrinking of the hair follicles as long as you are taking it. It has got some side effects; however; a decrease in one’s sex drive is a notable one.

Spironolactone

Also known as Aldactone. It is a drug prescribed to women. It is a diuretic that also has anti-androgen capacities. When taken, it will reduce the androgen quantities present within the body.

Androgens are male sex hormone from which testosterone is the main one. Reducing the androgens reduces testosterone levels and, therefore, results in less DHT to convert from it.

No DHT produced within the body means, of course, that your hair follicles will remain free from its shrinking effects and your hair won’t thin. Spironolactone has some side effects too. Dizziness, thirstiness, and possible vomiting are just some of them.

Minoxidil

Also known as Rogaine. This is a topical solution that stimulates hair growth. It is available over the counter in two different presentations, foam and liquid. Both also come in either 5% or 2% concertation.

It works by improving blood flow and delivering nutrients to the hair follicles. The result is visible after six months of use, applying it two times a day. Minoxidil only helps you grow hair; it does not treat the underlying causes of hair loss.

Hair Transplant

A follicular unit excision (FUE) hair transplant procedure is the most definitive, permanent answer to a hair loss problem. It takes healthy hair follicles from the back of the scalp and moves them into the balding area via microincisions. The grafted hair follicles will take to the area and start growing as if they were still on their original place

So it does not matter if your hair follicles already shrunk; the procedure provides you with new, still-working ones for the area.

The results are also natural-looking. Our surgeon makes sure to follow your hair’s natural growth pattern, so they blend in seamlessly.

How to Finally Choose a Hair Loss Treatment

The choice of hair loss treatment to undergo comes down to a trade-off. Perhaps the following can help you arrive at a decision.

  • If you are willing to apply it constantly for months and not losing that much hair, choose minoxidil.
  • If you want to stop hair loss and don’t mind the side effects, choose either Propecia (men) or Spironolactone (women).
  • If you want to have a permanent solution to your hair loss, get a hair transplant procedure for the job.
