Is It Possible to Do a Hair Transplant during Winter?

We can do hair transplants during any season we wish. However, winter is probably the best season to get a hair transplant operation. Winter is the best because, in winter, the weather is usually mild or cold.

There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding having hair transplantation during winter. They are rarely true, of course. Let’s have a peek at these misconceptions.

They say hair breaks more likely during winter. People think that we lose more hair in the winter season, but this is only true in one scenario. In the scenario where the scalp becomes dry, follicles may loosen from the roots. There’s a fix for this though. Getting properly hydrated through the day can help prevent dryness in the scalp.

Another misconception is that washing your hair too often during winter causes hair loss. This is downright untrue. There is no reason to avoid baths as it keeps natural residue away from the scalp. A clean scalp is a better environment for hair to flourish in. Neglecting baths may even have negative consequences rather than good.

Actually, during winter, it may prove useful to utilise some extra hair care. True, advertisements exaggerate this a bit, but your hair will appreciate the extra effort you put in during harsher months.

Advantages of Getting a Transplant in Winter

Two of the advantages are purely environmental:

  • There is not much intense sunlight.
  • People sweat significantly less during winter.

The newly transplanted hair is pretty sensitive to sunlight. Water is much needed by your scalp while trying to heal, and excessive sunlight can cause that to evaporate. Using headwear to block sunlight when you are going to stay under the sun for long hours can partially fix this problem. But you will not have to worry about this part at all during the winter months.

Another disadvantage that the warm air and hot sun brings is the sweating. Sweating can have quite an adverse effect on your scalp, especially right after the operation. That’s why we advise our patients to avoid strenuous physical activity for a while after the hair transplantation regardless of the season. Though it is a general fact that we sweat more during summer. The air is generally more humid and hotter, and the sun shines brighter and for longer periods of time. Furthermore, sweating will make your delicate recipient area sweaty, and touching the grafts at this point may cause harm to them.

Also, many patients pick summer simply because people regard wearing hats more normally during winter. You cannot wear a nice, warm woolly hat right after the operation may be, but you can always ask your doctor. Following his instructions will help you a lot, regarding any case.
