Sudden Hair Loss May Be Alopecia

Alopecia areata is a widespread disease that usually leads to unpredictable and sudden hair loss. This is because of the white blood cells that attack the cells in the hair follicles, preventing hair growth. In autoimmune diseases, the immune system begins to fight with its own cells. However, the exact reason why the body’s immune system targets hair follicles in this way is still a mystery for researchers.

Cases of severe stress can increase the condition. However, most recent research indicates a genetic cause. This disease has nothing to do with what we eat. The disease may start in the face of stress and sadness, but not all these reasons are present in all cases.

The most prominent symptom of alopecia is irregular hair loss. The patient may experience regional hair loss, especially on the scalp. Beard and eyelashes can be affected by this disorder. Hair loss can develop suddenly within a few days or weeks. The most significant effect of this disease is psychological influence on the person.

Approximately 5% of patients experience complete hair loss because of this disorder. If the inflammation of the follicles decreases, the hair can grow again. However, some people may experience complete hair loss on the scalp, which needs treatment.

Treatment of Alopecia

There is no certain treatment method for alopecia areata, although there are some forms of treatment that you can use to get your healthy hair back. The disease can heal spontaneously over time. Sometimes new hair strands can be white or grey; then they return to their original colour.

Alopecia is usually a temporary disease. After a short period, an improvement is observed. Hair turns back to its original state. In most of the cases, improvement is seen within six months or one year.

The most common treatment is the use of corticosteroids. They are usually administered by local injections or orally. This treatment does not prevent hair loss in new areas. However, if the hair starts to grow, additional injections will help the hair to come out.

Many different alternative methods are present in the treatment of the disease. However, the results of these treatments are variable. The use of some lotions causes hair to grow in some people. For this purpose, drugs with cortisone or minoxidil and an irritating agent dithranol can be used.

In the treatment called immunotherapy, a substance at a low concentration is applied to the target area. Unfortunately, this treatment is irritating and unpleasant, often causing enlargement of the lymph nodes.
