Swelling After Hair Transplant

Some complications and minor problems after hair transplantation can make the patient uncomfortable and suspicious. One of the small complications is mild oedema swelling of the face and eye. It is a perfectly normal situation after hair transplantation. In professional hands, there will be no problem. Swelling lasts approximately in 3-5 days.

Causes of Swelling After Hair Transplant

The causes of swelling after hair transplantation may vary. Swelling after cultivation is mainly due to 3 different reasons.

After hair transplantation, the swelling occurs primarily because of the serum injected into the scalp before the operation. Before the surgery, doctors administer anaesthesia the area and give the serum to the scalp. This serum helps to create a space between the skin and the skull by swelling the scalp. The gap between the scalp and the skull is necessary for easy collection and transplantation of the hair follicles.

At the end of the operation, the gravity effect occurs when the fluid moves. It slowly reaches down to the eyelids of the patient. It can even spread from the eyelids to the temple and cheekbones.

One of the reasons for swelling is the scalp’s defence mechanism against the surgical procedure. Interventions such as harvesting roots, opening channels and placing roots may cause blood oedema after hair transplantation as it affects the blood circulation in the region.

Swelling or oedema may also occur in the planting area due to any impact. With this impact, the swelling aside, the planted hair may also be in danger of being displaced. Because of this risk, you should not make sudden moves after hair transplantation as the scalp is open to all kinds of danger until the roots hold their places. Besides, depending on the lying position, the pillow may be the cause of the impact-induced swelling.

How can you get rid of the swelling?

It is possible to reduce oedema more quickly with some measures. You can find some pieces of advice below.

  • You should pay attention to what the doctor suggests.
  • Do not lean forward until swelling passes.
  • Strenuous activities such as sports and sexual intercourse that increase blood circulation are forbidden for about one week.

  • Take a few pillows under your neck during sleep and keep your head high.
