What’s Changed in the Field of Hair Transplant in the Last Ten Years?

Hair loss is actually quite common all over the world. As you know, hair transplant is the most effective treatment method against hair loss. Have you ever wondered about the origin and the development of hair transplant?

The origin of hair treatment methods dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century. The first technique was applied in the eyebrows and eyelashes in Japan in the 1930s. However, the rest of the world became aware of Japan’s work years later. Norman Orentreich performed the first hair transplant operation for male pattern baldness. In the 1980s, mini- and micrograft techniques came into play.

In 1995, the medical world met with FUT technique with the work of William R. Rassman and Robert M. Bernstein. This technique, which was quite common until the mid-2000s, is not preferred today with certain exceptions due to new technological developments.

The FUE (follicular unit extraction) method was introduced to the medical world in 2002. This method involves collecting the hair follicles one by one. In 2013, with the robotic revolution, the robotic hair transplant technique was combined with FUE. In this method, the doctor technically programs and directs the robot. The doctor collects the follicles with the robot and places them one by one.

For the robot to scan the hair follicles, the hair should be a maximum length of three millimetres. Hair specialists and scientists got rid of the shaving phase for hair transplant. With the DHI method, we can collect and place hair grafts without shaving or shortening the hair.

DHI and FUE have become the most common methods in the hair loss treatment field. However, scientists are still working on some issues and have come up with different solutions for hair loss.

FUE and DHI

The latest and most reliable technologies in hair transplant are undoubtedly FUE and DHI. Hair specialists and scientists are still conducting research on these two methods to improve them. Rather than creating a new technique, improving the existing methods seem to make more sense.

The latest technology in hair transplant with these methods is unshaven or long hair transplant. It is a revolutionary step to avoid the unpleasant image after the hair transplant operations. Moreover, this step made a faster healing period possible.

Hair Cloning

In addition, scientists continue to work on hair cloning, which can be the ultimate solution to the problem of baldness. The basis of the concept of hair cloning lies in the production of hair follicles from a single hair follicle that is compatible with the individual. Although scientists have done experiments, they have not cloned human hair follicle cells yet.

Although American scientists have not yet implemented this method, they claim that this method will be more effective than all existing techniques for hair transplant. It is worth noting that this work is still on the research stage.
